In mid-2018, Holland Drilling installed a drinking water pipeline on the island of Cyprus. To guarantee the drinking water supply to several villages, an HDD drilling operation had to be performed at the intersection of a mountain in southern Cyprus. The project included supplying, welding, and testing the 25-bar water pipeline, which carried a medium-pressure water pressure of 10 bar.
Following detailed engineering, equipment and materials were delivered to the island, and drilling commenced. The pilot drilling was performed with a mud motor, and the reaming was carried out with a hole opener. After several cleaning runs, the product pipe was successfully retracted within the specified tolerances and timeframe. A pressure test was then performed, after which the pipe could be connected to the existing network.
